The Sailing Barge Edme
Allison is now taking bookings for Day Charters 2008, for groups who wish to experience the power and grace of a Thames Barge under full sail. She is also arranging a special day for artists who wish to include some painting time on their trip. A day on the Edme is actually an ideal day out for art clubs or bird watchers, wishing to take advantage of the picturesque creeks and backwaters of the Colne and Blackwater Estuary. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, frequented by bird watchers, fishermen and other sailing enthusiasts. However, at day out on the Edme also is suitable for a family outing, an unusual venue for a celebration such as an anniversary, or just a good excuse for a group of friends to get together for relaxing time. Tuesday 15th July 2008 - this day has been set aside especially for people who want to come out sailing on their own, or with only one or two friends and who are happy to join in with other individuals.
With little alteration since she was built, her large open hold, with removable hatches, means that she is still able to carry cargo and this also makes for an enjoyable open space below for those onboard. Her present owners took her on in 1989 and have enjoyed considerable success in the annual East Coast Barge Races. Being one of only two engineless barges, she takes pride in her sailing skills and whatever your destination you will feel that you have journeyed that passage in full. If you would like to experience the power and majestic grace of a Thames Barge under full sail you could do no better than a day aboard Edme. She may carry up to 12 passengers, accompanied by the Skipper and First Mate. Click here for more information on day charters and booking. |

Summer Sailing Charters on the Barge Edme - for groups or individual interested in a pure, classic sailing experience.
Edme is a unique Thames Sailing Barge as she has never had an engine. She was built by Canns of Harwich and named after the EDME Company (English Diastatic Malt Extract), situated at Mistley Quay, Essex, who are still in production today.
