Watershed Studio
Many of our courses in 2021, from April to August, were rescheduled from 2020. This means that many are already full or nearly full which might be frustrating but we are contacting everyone to check their current status so it's worth getting you name on a waiting list as you might well be in luck!

We are keeping everything crossed that 2021 will proceed in the normal smooth way of things without any of the shocks we all experienced this Spring!! We can't wait to see everyone and share our lockdown stories although hopefully it will be old news by then!

In this exciting, informative workshop, Stephie will show you how to paint wildlife in watercolour, full of colour, with an impressionistic feel, making your work unique. You will focus on the face of the animal and how to portray feelings and emotions in your subject. There will be a mixture of ongoing demonstrating and one-to-one attention, thereby enabling everyone to work to the best of their own ability making this workshop suitable for all, even beginners.

You will be encouraged to develop your own style, to learn how to paint with Instinct alongside technique, to simplify drawings prior to painting to enable a looser style, to paint with colour that deviates away from the norm. Most of all, you'll have fun and come away inspired to paint more!

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of cutting lino and explore how to use the reduction technique to print a two-colour design. We begin by getting to grips with the basics of lino printing by experimenting with mark making and simple reduction prints and then use these techniques to develop a two-colour design on an A5 or A6 soft-cut lino plate. Soft cut lino is very easy to carve your design and will allow you to make an expressive print. We will print the plates using our relief printing press.

The choice of subject it yours - Trevor will bring along masses of images of wildlife and farm animals so you can decide what inspires you the most.

The workshop is suitable for beginners to printmaking and lino cutting, or those with a little knowledge who would like to increase their knowledge. Those with more experience will be able to cut a more complex design, while beginners will work on something more simple. We cover all the basics and so no prior experience in lino is necessary.

Working in oils over two days, join Graham Webber ROI IEA in learning how to paint 'en plein air', to gather information for a larger painting back in the studio. Throughout the two days Graham will give you an insight into working outside, what materials and techniques will help you make the most of the limited time and challenges of working on the spot from life. Learning how to distill the subject in front of you into key pieces of information and advice on equipment, working wet in wet, colour matching and working with shapes will be part of day one. Back in the studio on day two, we will focus in more depth on the qualities of composition, colour mixing, colour harmonies and tonal balance. Our skill as artists will come into play, employing artistic licence to help the painting become more dynamic, developing the work on a larger scale towards a final piece.

Discoveries in watercolour are all the sweeter because it’s a fantastic medium to play with. This is where you can make your best discoveries – just by playing and understanding the relationships between hand, heart, brush, paper, pigment and water! Playing gives us the confidence to just take a risk and throw some colour down and see what happens. Playing also gives us the latitude to slow down and see the wonders the pigments create all by themselves leading us to paint and create intuitively.

In this workshop, we’ll explore abstraction and design, shapes and marks, pattern and creating physical and visual texture. We’ll also focus on playing with new colours and pigments, new tools and media and develop our concept and design thinking processes.
