These are our the remaining courses on our Programme for 2024 - there are several places left on some courses this autumn but don't' leave it too late to book. However it's always worth trying for a last minute place - you might be lucky!

Booking - please use the form under each workshop description below - we will confirm by email and then send an invoice to you for the non-refundable deposit of £30/day. This will secure your place with the balance due a month before the course. We will send out invoices so you don't have to worry about remembering!

Materials - we will send you a course sheet, as an attachment, that includes a list of all the materials you will need to bring with you. The materials and equipment are all supplied for craft days, as well as all of Trevor Osborne's courses.

Lunch - we provide a complimentary lunch for students who attend our courses. We find that eating together at lunchtime makes the day a much more sociable occasion. We provide a simple, single choice of main meal, with a vegetarian option, and try to cater for some dietary needs within that remit, provided you inform us well in advance. However, you will need to provide your own lunch if we find we have too many diet variations to cope with, or your requirements are more complex, or you have severe allergies as regretfully we are unable to cater for these types of diet.

Refreshments - tea, coffee, decaf, herbal teas etc are on tap all day, included in the price of the course. Homemade cake/biscuits are also provided.

We’re delighted to present this oil painting course with acclaimed Landscape Artist from Norfolk, Nial Adams. Trained in the classical techniques of traditional landscape oil painting by his father as a young boy, Nial has developed a style recognised for its modern twist on the classical method.

Day one - A Focus on Tonality: On this day Nial will be teaching the fundamentals of creating strong tonal balance and structure. A staunch advocate of the benefits of tonalism in oil painting, Nial will share his knowledge and experience of this essential skill.

Day Two - During the second day with Nial you'll learn the fundamentals of extending tonal technique as well as bringing in colour and highlights through the use of 'glazing and scumbling'. This traditional technique, which is most expertly expressed by the likes of J.M.W.Turner, brings the benefits of oil painting to life.

This one-day course will explore how to create the wonderful textures found in brick, plaster and stone structures. The Natural Earth colours are perfect for creating these textures with the main emphasis being on using a lot of water and allowing the paint, rather than the brush, to do the work for you. Participants will be asked to bring their own photos to work from.

You will be working under the expert guidance of Richard Taylor who has written and illustrated ten books on painting buildings over the past thirty years and has taught at the Watershed Studio since the day it opened. Demonstrations and personal guidance are the key to Richard’s teaching along with plentiful demonstration examples for you to work from.

We will work from sketches, photos and colour studies to develop a landscape painting over two days. We will see how artistic licence can be used to enhance aspects of aerial perspective, composition and shape as well as discussing colour mixing and building character in your painting. That’s what this workshop is all about – helping you to improve your drawing technique so you can create better paintings. Using graphite pencil, charcoal and pen we will do several exercises to help you draw more accurately, learn how to add convincing shading by hatching and cross hatching, use charcoal for a tonal study, and then pen & ink to do a study of texture and form. We will also look at the basic rules of perspective to help you draw buildings more realistically.
