Join Margaret on this lovely two days of portrait painting that's a bit different as you will be painting on cartridge paper. This will allow the oil paint to sink in, giving a drier surface to build up the layers of oil paint

Day 1 Working from a black and white photograph of an unknown sitter will allow concentration on the structure and features of the face, freeing us to choose our own colour palette to enhance these features.

Day 2. Working from a colour photo of a well known face. It is more difficult to recognise and concentrate on the basic structure of a known face, as familiarity can somehow make it harder to simplify the features. Colour, also, can add another detail to be slavishly copied rather than found.

With her unrivalled use of pastels and skilful application of oil paint, Suffolk-based Margaret Glass is known particularly for her stunning depictions of boats, barges and waterside scenes but she is equally skilled at portrait painting and you will be in safe and wonderful hands on this fabulous two days.

Pen & wash (an ink drawing with watercolours added) is a delightful medium for quick, loose sketchbook studies or for paintings that require a lot more detail. In this two day course, Carole will start by demonstrating the range of pens available and show you a variety of options for whatever style you favour. You will be able to spend some time “experimenting” before starting on your sketches or painting/s.

There are many interesting things in and around the studio to paint – the old tractor, the garden with its pretty flowers and interesting nick knacks or the views across the fields with the horses, ducks and wildlife. On the other hand, you may prefer to work from photographs in the studio to create your pen & wash masterpiece!

Developing a sketchbook is both satisfying and useful for building a working knowledge of the landscape which can be used later in the studio. Working outside, from life, we will look at how to effectively develop a sketchbook practice where you can capture the essence of a subject quickly and energetically. We will use acrylic paints and pencil to work in the sketchbook looking at four different subjects over the two days. We will focus on selecting a good composition, mapping out tonal values, making colour notes and much more to build a practice suitable for both working up in the studio or just enjoying the countryside. By the end of the workshop you will have a full sketchbook to refer back to and develop into the future. Later in the year you can learn how to take the sketches further in Graham’s ‘Developing sketches into landscape oil paintings’ workshop.

Ian McManus, a highly experienced watercolourist and sought after tutor, will guide you in painting scenes with boats and reflections in the water as the focal point such as harbour, bays and quayside scenes.

The subject matter can often seem very challenging however Ian’s demos and tuition will help you simplify the subject. Initially creating an affective under-sketch with a strong composition and focal point; then apply paint dynamically to create an affective loose and lively watercolour. With Ians guidance you will see immediate results in your watercolours and have lots of tips and advise for ongoing improvements to give your watercolours a lively lift .

This can be attended as a 1or 2 day workshop. 2 days allowing you to immerse yourself and enjoying creating artworks alongside Ian, lifting your artworks to the next level. You can attend just 1 day only as there will be a different painting created on each day. The core method of the painting process will be covered on each session but different subject and principles for creating effective watercolours will be explored.

Ian’s guidance through the creation of a painting helps improve your understanding of effective composition, accurate perspective and how connection in your artwork and a clear focal point is vital to the success of good picture creation. These core principles of simplified yet well placed elements in your initial drawing allow you to then progress to using strong tonal values and limited but lively pops of colour to give your street scenes atmosphere and zing ; freeing you up to apply paint with confident and direct brushwork in a loose and lively manner to create more appealing watercolour artworks filled with ambience and atmosphere.

Ians painting genre is varied but he is well known for painting street scenes with an interesting viewpoint be it a local village, town or city . Boats and harbours are great subjects to capture and also rural and pastoral landscapes too. Ian strives to always create an appealing and atmospheric view of the surroundings and help his students to do so too. The things you will learn working with him are transferable to many subject matters and help you select more effective subject matter to capture in your artworks and improve your application of watercolours in a loose style whether you wish to create a painting in studio or on location.

This workshop is designed for those with a little experience of watercolour and those at a more intermediate level, it would not be suitable for absolute beginner.

Enamelled Jewellery or pictures inspired by nature
Creating Enamelled Pictures using stencils, glass media and wet-packing techniques
The art of enamelling is most celebrated in modern times by the creation of jewellery, but you only have to visit the V & A museum to realise its value as an art form too. In this one-day class we will look the application of enamel (glass) powder to a copper base to create a simple picture. We will look at the techniques of applying glass media, wet-packing (applying our enamels like paint) and using stencils to help us achieve this. The nature of using glass and heat are very exciting but do require students to be adaptive in their designs as once glass is fired in the kiln things do not always go to plan, that’s why your tutor Toni Peers, who is a level 3 teacher and has over 15 years teaching experience, loves this art form so much. You can work on one piece of copper (up to 7.5cm2) to create your enamelled picture during this class, or you could choose to make 2 to 3 landscaped themed pendants. Ideally suited to those who have attended Toni’s beginners’ class but beginners are welcome.

Join us for a fun workshop making your own unique festive door wreath. Allison will take you through the process of mossing and wiring up your base before you help yourselves to the abundance of foliage available and start creating your masterpiece. Allison will lead by demonstration and you will get plenty of one to one help. You will also be guided and given practical advice on how to add decorations and personalise your wreath.

All foliage will be provided, as well as wires and frames, plus inspiration and a very friendly atmosphere.

Please bring seccateurs and/or any other Christmassy bits like baubles, berries, fat ribbon and glitzy bits to personalise your creation. Some people like to add battery lights and bows too!

You will be using wires, moss and lots of natural greenery so please do dress accordingly.

These are fun sessions and suitable for everyone including complete novices.
