Watershed Studio
We are looking foward to the second half of our programme of courses for this year. There are plenty of art and craft workshops to choose from although most are already fully booked - great for us but maybe not for you? However, we do still have a few vacancies that you will find if you scroll down, and of course we are always happy to take names for waiting lists as we do sometimes experience the odd cancellation when life interrupts people's plans!

We won't be producing a printed brochure so it's all here. Just scroll down the calendar year, past the gift vouchers, to find out who is coming and when. Do email Allison if you would like to receive Watershed Newsletters during the year - please don't panic - we don't bombard you with these by any means!
Why not give Watershed Gift Vouchers as an ideal present for a Birthday or Christmas present?

We can do vouchers for any amount you wish and send it in a card to either yourself or to the recipient. Alternatively we can email out the voucher.

Fill in the form below, or give us a ring, and we can get it sorted!

This exciting day with John will cover elements of simplifying drawing to focus upon portraying the character and "feel" of a building study.  In particular you will be exploring how we see subjects and what we include and what we omit to produce quality pieces of work which we feel work for us. John wants to encourage participants to achieve a few of pieces of work with which they can feel pleased whilst allowing individual styles to shine through. John teaches and advocates a loose approach to drawing/watercolour style so be prepared to experiment and maybe draw like never before.

Pen and wash; line and wash; ink and watercolour. Whatever you call it, this is a lovely expressive way of working. It is excellent for quick sketches and more finished paintings. The key thing is to help both ink and watercolour play their part to the full and ensure that 2+2=5 - the line work and the watercolour together add up to more than a coloured in drawing or an outlined painting.

We will start with exploring the role of line, then move on to letting the watercolour flow and then bring both elements together. Whether you wish to use this technique for portraits, landscapes, urban sketching, animals, still life or flora, you will learn how to capture many different subjects.

Liz Chaderton is a professional artist based in Berkshire. She creates paintings which help people see the natural world in a new and fresh light. She works mainly in watercolour and ink. A selection of her paintings are published in the UK and USA. Her first book, ‘Painting watercolours on canvas’ was published by The Crowood Press in 2019 and the second in 2020 (Painting Animals in Watercolour). The third, Line and Wash Painting, will come out in January 2022. She also writes regularly for The Leisure Painter and Paint magazine.

Have a fabulous fun day with Trevor using a variety of printing techniques to produce a good run of your own individual and completely unique Christmas cards for family and friends.

As well as lino printing Trevor will have some other methods of printing for you to experiment with along with lovely colours and papers..

He will take you through the processes stage by stage—you are in excellent hands!! Your only limit is your imagination!!

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of cutting lino and explore how to use the reduction technique to print a two-colour design. We begin by getting to grips with the basics of lino printing by experimenting with mark making and simple reduction prints and then use these techniques to develop a two-colour design on an A5 or A6 soft-cut lino plate. Soft cut lino is very easy to carve your design and will allow you to make an expressive print. We will print the plates using our relief printing press.

The choice of subject it yours - Trevor will bring along masses of seasonal images so you can decide what inspires you the most - or bring your own ideas if you prefer?

The workshop is suitable for beginners to printmaking and lino cutting, or those with a little knowledge who would like to increase their knowledge. Those with more experience will be able to cut a more complex design, while beginners will work on something more simple. We cover all the basics and so no prior experience in lino is necessary.

This workshop will be taking a floral subject and using it as inspiration to work from in the alla prima manner in oil. Alex will demonstrate how he paints a floral subject from life observation and then give guidance and feedback to participants as they create their own paintings. The alla prima approach is ideally suited to creating a finished painting in one or two sessions and often results in work which has qualities of spontaneity, bravura brush work but also truthful naturalism.

Artist biography
My work in oil is mainly in the alla prima manner and usually directly from life study. Alla prima, direct painting or wet-in-wet, is exciting and often surprising. It is deemed the ultimate in representational art because it is about actual experience as it happens. It demands the highest level of a painter's skill.

I am inspired by all kinds of subjects and I feel that creating work starts with developing a sensitivity to the beauty present. By ‘beauty’ I mean whatever moves, inspires, intrigues or is simply interesting that I want to study more deeply. Most often it is the quality of light which inspires.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This one-day course is for anyone fascinated by the medium, in particular those of you who have sometimes hit a brick wall in your watercolour painting. Either your colours have turned ‘muddy’ when mixed, your greens have become unnaturally luminous, your vibrant reds dry to a dull pink – or you are simply befuddled by the names of paints and aren’t really sure what they are for.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
We will start with an exploration of how watercolour paints interact with watercolour paper, then move on to consider the different types of paints – synthetic dyes (eg Quinacridone Red), organic colours (eg Indian Yellow) and the natural earth colours (eg ochres, siennas and umbers). We will also consider the Achromatic range of paints (Payne’s grey and neutral tints) and maybe try mixing your own. Your knowledge of how and why these paints respond as they do will then be applied to the skills of mixing clear, translucent shadow and creating sharp highlights using easy to sketch subjects such as lemons, oranges, leaves etc. Simple theory and practice will underpin all teaching points.
WHAT WILL I DO IN THE STUDIO?
All the knowledge and understanding gained will be reinforced by making small sketches and vignettes and colour mixing samples to be used as an ‘aide memoir’ for the future. When you feel confident with this we will move on to larger scale sketches of subjects within the same ‘colour family’ – eg sunflower heads (yellow and oranges) and grape vines (reds and purples). The really brave may move onto greens!!!!!
WHO WILL BE TEACHING YOU?
Your tutor for this course will be Richard Taylor Cert.Ed BA(Hons) MA. Richard is the author of a long list of Watercolour instructional books and was the Executive Editor on the best-selling Art Course magazine. Richard is also an ‘Advanced Skills Teacher’ and acted as an advisor on art teaching to Essex Local Authority as well as playing a major role in training art teachers at Higher Education establishments throughout the county.
