If you have ever had a great photo that you wanted to paint but has ended in disappointment then this course will help you to be able to take better photos for painting and perhaps more importantly, how to use them as an aid, alongside other reference materials to achieve great oil paintings. You are invited to bring your own photographs or work from the tutors' references to use as inspiration for an oil painting. As well as learning the fundamentals of using oil paint you will also learn how to use a photograph to develop your work. Rather than copying a photo we will talk about analysing the image, how to decide what to leave out and what to include and crucially how to simplify what you see. Alongside this we will also discover what the camera is useful for and how it can fool us. By the end of the course you will gain an insight into how to use the camera to take better pictures for painting reference.

Flowers on a large scale have always fascinated Kay. Their colour, form and habit so different from each other. Kay will demonstrate for maybe 20 minutes on the first morning, also showing her work and chatting about her watercolour journey since she started painting professionally.

After that comes the start of the scary fun part as you decide on your flower composition and get drawing and painting, or just painting if you prefer. There will be further demonstrations as you require. Kay is encouraging, supportive and will give one to one tuition throughout the course. Always excellent fun as well as inspiring - this very popular tutor manages to get students to produce some amazing work even if they arrive feeling pretty new to it all and out of their comfort zone!

When all’s said and done, portraits should look like their sitter; it’s a kind of non-negotiable minimum. On this workshop Keith teaches the foundations for achieving a true likeness … getting a subject’s facial features in the right place, and giving your paintings a real sense of form. After that, the way you paint, the way you feel about art, the painters you admire, can all come into play. To keep things more straightforward, you’ll learn to paint with a restricted palette, which will make your colour choices a whole lot easier.
On this course Keith teaches with wall-to-wall help, advice and encouragement. It’s the portrait workshop for anyone who’d like to make headway with this endlessly fascinating subject. You will be working from photographs - Keith will supply these but you are welcome to bring your own too.

This workshop will be taking a floral subject and using it as inspiration to work from in the alla prima manner in oil. Alex will demonstrate how he paints a floral subject from life observation and then give guidance and feedback to participants as they create their own paintings. The alla prima approach is ideally suited to creating a finished painting in one or two sessions and often results in work which has qualities of spontaneity, bravura brush work but also truthful naturalism.

Artist biography
My work in oil is mainly in the alla prima manner and usually directly from life study. Alla prima, direct painting or wet-in-wet, is exciting and often surprising. It is deemed the ultimate in representational art because it is about actual experience as it happens. It demands the highest level of a painter's skill.

I am inspired by all kinds of subjects and I feel that creating work starts with developing a sensitivity to the beauty present. By ‘beauty’ I mean whatever moves, inspires, intrigues or is simply interesting that I want to study more deeply. Most often it is the quality of light which inspires.

We’re delighted to present this oil painting course with acclaimed Landscape Artist from Norfolk, Nial Adams. Trained in the classical techniques of traditional landscape oil painting by his father as a young boy, Nial has developed a style recognised for its modern twist on the classical method.

A Focus on Tonality: On this day Nial will be teaching the fundamentals of creating strong tonal balance and structure. A staunch advocate of the benefits of tonalism in oil painting, Nial will share his knowledge and experience of this essential skill.

Day Two - During the second day with Nial you'll learn the fundamentals of extending tonal technique as well as bringing in colour and highlights through the use of 'glazing and scumbling'. This traditional technique, which is most expertly expressed by the likes of J.M.W.Turner, brings the benefits of oil painting to life.

This exciting day with John will cover elements of simplifying drawing to focus upon portraying the character and "feel" of a building study.  In particular you will be exploring how we see subjects and what we include and what we omit to produce quality pieces of work which we feel work for us. John wants to encourage participants to achieve a few of pieces of work with which they can feel pleased whilst allowing individual styles to shine through. John teaches and advocates a loose approach to drawing/watercolour style so be prepared to experiment and maybe draw like never before.

John is largely self-taught and deeply inspired by the landscape and buildings of Coastal Suffolk where he lives and works. He has exhibited in the UK and Channel Islands and sells his work worldwide.
