Watershed Studio
2022
We are already looking foward to our 2022 programme, hopefully without all the interruptions of the past couple of years!! Currently we are trying to make our way though this year but once courses are back up and running and confidence in the future has increased this page will begin to fill with exciting courses!! Watch this space!

Cost: £170 including delicious farmhouse lunches, afternoon cake and refreshments on tap
10am to 4.30pm daily

Flowers on a large scale have always fascinated Kay. Their colour, form and habit so different from each other. Kay will demonstrate for maybe 20 minutes on the first morning, also showing her work and chatting about her watercolour journey since she started painting professionally.

After that comes the start of the scary fun part as you decide on your flower composition and get drawing and painting, or just painting if you prefer. There will be further demonstrations as you require. Kay is encouraging, supportive and will give one to one tuition throughout the course. Always excellent fun as well as inspiring - this very popular tutor manages to get students to produce some amazing work even if they arrive feeling pretty new to it all and out of their comfort zone!

This workshop will be taking a floral subject and using it as inspiration to work from in the alla prima manner in oil. Alex will demonstrate how he paints a floral subject from life observation and then give guidance and feedback to participants as they create their own paintings. The alla prima approach is ideally suited to creating a finished painting in one or two sessions and often results in work which has qualities of spontaneity, bravura brush work but also truthful naturalism.

Artist biography
My work in oil is mainly in the alla prima manner and usually directly from life study. Alla prima, direct painting or wet-in-wet, is exciting and often surprising. It is deemed the ultimate in representational art because it is about actual experience as it happens. It demands the highest level of a painter's skill.

I am inspired by all kinds of subjects and I feel that creating work starts with developing a sensitivity to the beauty present. By ‘beauty’ I mean whatever moves, inspires, intrigues or is simply interesting that I want to study more deeply. Most often it is the quality of light which inspires.
